Cash by Optus™ is a facility that let’s you store up to $500 to make payments using your mobile phone with Visa PayWave technology or using a Visa prepaid debit card over the phone or online. Cash by Optus™ is now extending their digital payments into smart wearables. Optus has announced a proof of concept that uses wearable technology to enable mobile payments on Apple and Android handsets via the Cash by Optus app.

Media Releases

Brief

Using the wireframes created by Fay Afshar, User Experience Architect, style the design according to the new Optus branding launched in mid 2014. This project was the first newly Optus branded piece of digital work nationally. Additionally, after the launch of Android, an audit for an iPhone design was prepared, followed by UX enhancements to incorporate wearable technology.

UI Design

Using the new Optus branding, the style was to be kept minimal. The app technology itself is unfamiliar territory for new users, so an uncomplicated visual journey needed to be implemented to ensure it’s success. The smart phone application was to be executed for Android devices only. I styled the typography bold and clean and tailored simple gestures to suit the transaction.

The UI focuses on 3 main interactions: Using the NFC to swipe and pay, recharging your account and paying via anonymous/secure authenticated credit card.

Additionally, I designed this app to AA accessibility compliancy.

Slick & Simple Guided Tour

Because this technology is still quite new, a slick and simple on-boarding process was required. I designed a horizontal swipe tour with each screen containing instructional videos. Contextually, the user always knew where they were in the tour using the pagination at the top of the screen.

NFC Payments

The main feature of this application is to swipe and pay by NFC. Using animated illustrations, I was able to demonstrate to the user how to perform this task. The user is able to switch to creditcard payment by simply swiping/tapping the tab to activate a different mode.

Easy Recharge

Topping up the user’s account needed to be swift and hassle free. Using the navigation along the top, the user can easily opt to recharge at any point in time. I designed three clear and bold call-to-action buttons for the user with the most popular option highlighted in yellow above the other two.

Custom illustrations

The instructional illustrations were the most complex and the most fun of the project. All icons and illustrations were created custom for this project and were used as part of the promotional video and print collateral and in future Optus branding. We tested the illustrations with users and perfected them to ensure the correct message was being delivered.

UX audit

After the project was launched the market, ideas to extend the app were discussed. As NFC has not been activated in apple products, the team at Optus discussed ways to by-pass the use of the phone and integrate wearables. The app needed to be audited for iPhone and further updated to include and mange various accessories.

These wearables will only be released at the end of the year. Right now, Optus only has working proof-of-concept prototypes.

The existing IA was assessed and new user journeys were created to cater for the new accessories.

The user journeys were translated into wireframes. Existing styles from the current app were used to develop the new screens into the Proof of concept prototype. These wearables will only be released at the end of the year.
